Why Eating Microwaved Popcorn Could be Hazardous to Your Health

Microwave Popcorn is not a healthy option for consuming popcorn.

Microwave popcorn is an easy and great tasting snack. But is it safe? Let’s talk about why eating stove top popcorn the “old fashioned way” with an Apollo Popper is not only better tasting, but also the safer, option.

According to a recent article on the Very Well Health website, “ chemicals in the flavoring and packaging that are linked to cancer and a condition known as bronchiolitis obliterans"

Vani Hart, a food activist and NYT best-selling author, who goes by the handle “The Food Babe,” also has chimed in on the topic.

“The bag almost all microwave popcorn varieties come in is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This chemical is the same toxic stuff found in Teflon pots and pans. It can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time. This chemical when heated has been linked to infertility, cancer, and other diseases in lab animals. No long-term studies have been conducted on humans, but the EPA lists this substance as a carcinogen,” she says.

A second cause for concern is the oil used in microwave popcorn. It contains ingredients like Propyl Gallate and Tertiary Butylhydroquinone. TBHQ is found in Smart Balance, and Hart says it’s a dead giveaway that you shouldn’t be eating foods that have a long chemical acronym on the label. TBHQ is a chemical made from butane. Need I say more?

Luckily, there’s an easy solution without denying yourself this wonderful snack. If you purchase the popcorn and oil yourself, you can make the decision to buy and use “clean” ingredients. Making popcorn in the Apollo Popper takes less than three minutes from start to finish and tastes even better and certainly healthier than its microwaved counterpart.

We recommend non-gmo, and gluten and preservative free popcorn.  Another benefit of stove popped corn is that it’s high in antioxidants.

Similarly, there are vegan, lactose free, gluten free, glutamate free and BSE free popcorn oils available to purchase from various popcorn companies. They contain no hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils and have no preservatives. They don’t contain any of the major allergens, which include soy, eggs, peanut, milk, wheat, tree nuts. Once you pair healthy, simple and natural popcorn with the Apollo Popper, you’ll never go back to Microwave Popcorn.

Not only does the Apollo Popper allow you to make an amazing snack with your choice of wholesome ingredients, but also you can also customize your popcorn experience using different types of popcorn and oils.
