It isn't just for Independence Day. The American flag is a symbol of freedom and liberty to which Americans recite the pledge of allegiance. It has 50 stars on a blue field that represent the 50 U.S. states, and 13 alternating red and white stripes that represent the 13 original colonies that declared independence from Great Britain. The colors on the flag have meanings: red for valor and bravery, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance and justice.

The current design of the U.S. flag is its 27th; the design of the flag has been modified officially 26 times since 1777. The 48-star flag was in effect for 47 years until the 49-star version became official on July 4, 1959. The 50-star flag was ordered by then President Eisenhower on August 21, 1959, and was adopted in July 1960.

The American flag has stood as a symbol of freedom and justice for over 225 years. Through wars and in times of peace, the sight of the American flag has given notice to foes and assurances to friends that democracy lives.
