Off in the distance, the clouds sink out of site. The distance to the horizon depends on the height of the observer and the curvature of the Earth. Assuming the Earth is a perfect sphere with a radius of 3963.19 miles, the distance to the horizon can be calculated using the following formula:

d = sqrt(2Rh + h^2)

where d is the distance to the horizon, R is the radius of the Earth, and h is the height of the observer above sea level. For example, if the observer is standing at sea level, the distance to the horizon is approximately 3.57 miles2. If the observer is standing on top of a 100-foot building, the distance to the horizon is approximately 12.2 miles.
