In the fall, trees lose their leaves as a part of their natural life cycle. As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, trees prepare for winter by shedding their leaves. The process of shedding leaves is called abscission. During this process, the tree grows a cell layer between the leaf stem and the branch called the abscission layer. This layer behaves like a pair of scissors, cutting the leaf off and sealing the cut so that no moisture can be lost during the winter.
