Sunlight spills through the golden canopy of yellow leaves. The yellow color of some fall leaves is due to the presence of carotenoids, which are pigments that complement chlorophyll by absorbing light energy in a different part of the visible spectrum. During the summer, these pigments are masked by the abundance of chlorophyll in the leaves. As the season changes, temperatures drop and days get shorter. Trees get less direct sunlight, and the chlorophyll in the leaves breaks down. The lack of chlorophyll reveals yellow and orange pigments that were already in the leaves.
