I'll take a stab at spelling bats backwards. Bats are often associated with Halloween, but it is unclear whether they like it or not. According to the National Wildlife Federation, bats have been a symbol of Halloween since its origins. The Celts built huge bonfires to ward off vengeful spirits during the ancient festival of Samhain, which attracted swarms of insects at night. These insects, in turn, attracted hunting bats, which were interpreted to be the spirits of the dead. Christianity heavily influenced our views on bats during the Middle Ages. In the Bible, the bat is depicted as an inherently unclean animal unfit for consumption, perhaps because bat roosts can develop a layer of guano, or feces, on the floor which was rightfully associated with illness. But it was Dante’s Inferno, a 700-year old epic medieval poem, that solidified bats as an allegory for the devil and his domain.
