Green leaves backlit by the summer sun against a brilliant blue sky. Chlorophyll is a pigment that gives plants their green color and helps them create their own food through photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, the plant uses chlorophyll to absorb light, usually sunlight, and transfer the energy absorbed from light to two kinds of energy-storing molecules. The plant then uses the stored energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose, a type of sugar. Plants use glucose together with nutrients taken from the soil to make new leaves and other plant parts. The process of photosynthesis produces oxygen, which is released by the plant into the air.
