The speed of a shark depends on its species, size, and the type of water it is swimming in. On average, sharks can cruise at about 5 mph (8 kph), which is roughly the same speed as the fastest Olympic swimmer. However, they can swim much faster over short bursts when they are attacking prey, reaching speeds of up to 12 mph (20 kph), which is equivalent to the speed of a running human on land. The fastest shark is the shortfin mako, which can swim at speeds of up to 31 mph (50 kph), although some sources say it can reach speeds as high as 60 mph (96.5 kph).
