The phrase “let sleeping dogs lie” means to avoid interfering in a situation that is currently stable. The origin of the phrase can be traced back to the medieval English poet Geoffrey Chaucer, who wrote in his book “Troilus and Criseyde” that “It is nought good a slepyng hound to wake”. The phrase later became established as a proverb, with the meaning “leave well alone”. The cautionary phrase was well-known by the 16th century and was included in John Heywood’s definitive “A Dialogue conteinyng the nomber in effect of all the Prouerbes in the Englishe tongue”.
